Mask Fitting

Choosing the correct mask-type and ensuring that the mask fits is of utmost importance when starting PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) therapy.

WHY?

  • Poor mask fit may lead to high mouth leak
  • Mouth leaks interfere with natural humidification
  • Increased leak results in increased flow
  • Increased flow leads to increased dryness
  • Increased dryness may result in nasal resistance

All the above lead to discomfort, which may eventually lead to decreased compliance.

WHAT?

There are generally 3 types of PAP masks which we offer:

  • Nasal Mask
  • Nasal Pillow Mask
  • Full-face Mask

NASAL MASKS

Nasal Masks are ideal for those who breathe through their nose when they sleep.

NASAL PILLOW MASKS

Nasal Pillow Masks are recommended for those who breathe through their nose when they sleep, and who prefer minimal facial contact and a real sense of freedom.

FULL-FACE MASKS

Full-face Masks are ideal for those who breathe through their mouths due to conditions such as a deviated nasal septum, or for those who are just prone to nasal congestion. Using a nasal mask in those instances will be less beneficial as the pressured air being pushed through the nasal passage by the PAP device goes straight out from the open mouth, doing little to keep the airway open.
